The idea of Art Opera was developed a few years ago. It was my mission to gather as much information on the wants and needs of other artists, especially the ones who fill up the East Coast Area. Every time I went to teach at an event, join an event or support friends at an event, I found I was always traveling a great distance to do the things I enjoyed, once there I met so many teachers and students doing the same thing, and as you might have figured many of them were from the East Coast, all expressing their wish for an East Coast art event that could bring their favorite teachers and friends together without doing all the travel all the time.
In research I found that Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey are actually the art and craft headquarters for many of the art supply companies, associations and event organizations, not to mention leaders in the publishing and fashion industry. Now the question is; “Why hasn’t there been an event like this?” Yes there are a plethora of art societies and centers, but never a major art gathering filled with some of the best teachers in the area and the country, our mission is to provide an East Coast event which can unite these teachers and students from around the whole east coast mixed with artists from around the country and abroad, all under one roof. Since this is our first year, we will be picking roughly10-15 teachers who teach everything from bookbinding, visual journaling, book arts, paper sculpting, assemblage art, metal making, jewelry, mixed media, painting/illustration, vintage arts, doll arts, sewing arts, and creative inspiration. As we grow as an event, or teachers will as well. We will never exceed over 20 teachers, I believe this keeps the classes full and gives everyone a better experience. Location? The location of Art Opera was chosen based on its geographical location and proximity to transportation such as airports, trains, buses and highway navigation. The event will be held at The Oyster Point Hotel located in Red Bank, NJ, in the heart of the NJ Shore line. Red Bank is one of NJ’s artful destinations, a trendy hot spot filled with a variety of art institutions, galleries, antique centers and excitement. The hotel is a mile from the train station, 5 minutes in from the NJ Garden State Parkway, 1 hour from NYC, 1 hour from Philadelphia, 1 hour from the Newark Airport, and less then 1.5 hours from LaGuardia and JFK Airports in NYC. Air-trains go direct from Newark Airport and JFK Airport straight to Red Bank, NJ for $20 or so round trip. Time? The Art Opera 2010 will start on Wednesday April 7, 2010 in the early evening at 6:30pm with an orientation dinner, meet/greet, swap time, small group workshop, make and takes, demos, silent auction, guest speakers and artful fun. The workshops begin Thursday morning at 8:30am and take place till Friday at 6:30pm, with a few workshop slots on Saturday morning at 8:30am till 11:30am. The Vendor Faire will take place on Saturday from 10am-5pm.
